Inequity Runs Deep?

''It's clear education alone is not the full reason for the pay gaps,'' said Sarah Crissey, a housing and economic statistician for the Census Bureau.

Right, though the conclusion that race is the reason is not supported by the evidence. The correlation exists and I'm the first in line to redress discrimination. But in this instance, the culprit appears to be "years of experience" which, while not an exact proxy for performance excellence on the job, is still the largest single indicator.

One could conceive of a situation where systematic, racially motivated historical factors have created situations where opportunities to achieve years of experience are not as plentiful for particular groups of people. Workers who take time off to start and/or raise a family have a similar, secondarily removed factor impacting job specific qualifications like "years of experience".
